The Glassmaking Process
History of several millenniums, tradition and innovation figuratively melt together in the glass furnace. It is where, as they say, the magic happens and the solid ingredients combined within the batch turn into glass – a solid and durable substance, which can be as practical as it can be beautiful, proven by the Czech history of artisan glass craft. The temperatures necessary to melt the batch and create glass can be as high as two thousand degrees celsius. Molten glass is stiff, non-homogenous and opaque, which is why clarifying agents have to be added. This also has a thinning effect, making the glass more transparent in the process. Clarifying gives the glass an opportunity to become a pliable matter for the artist to work with. What a machine would otherwise turn into a window pane or a simple vessel is elevated into a unique work of art when hand-blown and cast into a beechwood mold, as demonstrated by many pioneers of the craft, most notably the Czech firm Lasvit.
